“You have cancer.” These are three words that no one wants to hear, but I heard these words when I was only nine years old. Several months prior to my diagnosis, I started having pain in my right leg. The pain persisted over the next few months and got worse. Finally, the doctors diagnosed me with bone cancer.
Why do we have cancer in the world? One word: Sin! Not because of our sin, but because of the sin of Adam. Romans 5:12 tells us that sin entered the world by one man, Adam.
We have all been diagnosed with a sin disease. Sin separates us from God, who created us.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
You may be thinking you are a good person, and you may be by man’s standard, but have you ever evaluated yourself against God’s standard—the 10 commandments? (Exodus 20)
The 9th commandment says you shall not lie. Have you ever told a lie, even a little white lie?
The 8th commandment says you shall not steal. Have you ever taken anything that does not belong to you? Be honest.
The 2nd commandment says you shall not take God’s name in vain. Have you ever used God’s name as a curse word? This is the sin of blasphemy.
As we can see, we all fall short of God’s standard. If you were honest, you have admitted that you are a liar, a thief, and a blasphemer. These are only 3 of the 10 commandments. God’s standard is so high that the Bible tells us if we break one commandment, we are guilty of breaking them all (James 2:10).
There is no way any of us can meet God’s standard. A person cannot do enough good works to get to Heaven. If you were to stand before God, and based on your answers to the 10 commandments, would you be innocent or guilty? Would you go to Heaven or Hell? If we’re honest with ourselves, we would all plead guilty and admit that we are on our way to Hell. Does this concern you?
There was nothing I could do to heal myself of cancer. Left untreated, the cancer would have spread throughout my body and I would have died. However, after months of chemotherapy and having my leg amputated, I was cured of cancer.
The Bible says that the penalty for our sin is death, eternal separation from God. “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23). However, do you know that this penalty has already been paid by Jesus? John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
There is nothing we can do to earn our way to Heaven. As we already saw, we all fail to meet God’s standard. However, from the beginning of time, God had a plan to redeem us. God sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to make the payment for our sins. He did this by going to the cross. Jesus Christ paid our sin debt when He died on the cross.
In a sense, you could say that my leg paid the sacrifice that I may have life. My leg died that I might live. Jesus did the same for us, but He made the ultimate sacrifice by giving His life. He died that we might have life.
“…I am come that they might have life…” (John 10:10).
Thankfully, Jesus did not stay dead. The Bible tells us that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.
“He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:6).
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is what makes Christianity different from all other religions. Christians serve a risen Savior.
“Who do you say I am?” – Jesus Christ
This is the most important question you will answer in your lifetime. Everyone answers this question during their lifetime and your answer will determine where you spend eternity: Heaven or Hell.
Jesus first asked His disciples this question in an area that was known for its worship of false gods. The apostle Peter responded, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
My question for you is: Who do you say that Jesus is? Is He the Son of the Living God, or just another person?
You may be thinking you’re not going to answer this question. By not answering, you have actually answered the question, by rejecting Jesus and His sacrifice. Those who die rejecting Jesus will spend eternity in Hell.
If you do recognize your sin diagnosis, and that the only cure is through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, then today is the day to repent and be saved. Romans 10:9 and 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved … For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
The penalty for our sin is death, but the Bible goes on to say that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). Is Jesus the Son of the living God? Who is Jesus to you?
Will you repent and put your faith and trust in Jesus today?
